Controls & Instruments

Each time you get into the drivers seat, you should check that you are able to reach and use, each hand and foot control easily and comfortably.  You should also understand what each control does and how to use it properly.

Foot Controls

The Accelerator

  • The accelerator is the pedal on the right
  • Use your right foot to control the pedal
  • Also known as the gas pedal
  • Controls the flow of Fuel to the engine
  • Use light pressure
  • Pivot your foot between this pedal and footbrake

The Footbrake

  • The footbrake is the middle pedal
  • Use your right foot to control the pedal
  • When pressed this illuminates the brake lights
  • Slows and eventually stops the car
  • Pivot your foot between this pedal and accelerator
  • Operates the brakes on all four wheels
  • Use your mirrors before braking

The Clutch

  • The clutch is the pedal on the left
  • Use your left foot to operate
  • Breaks the link between the engine and the wheels, allowing the car to stop and change gears
  • Use clutch-control for slow speed manoeuvres

Hand Controls

Handbrake

  • Use when waiting or when parked
  • Handbrake works on the rear wheels only
  • Press the button and lift to secure the car
  • Lift the handbrake and then press the button to release
  • Make sure your car has stopped, fully, before applying the handbrake

Gear Lever

  • Each gear has its own range of speed
  • Adjust your speed, before selecting the appropriate gear
  • Look far along the road ahead when changing gear
  • Use palming method to change gears accurately
  • Use lower gears to move off

Steering Wheel

  • Use Pull-Push method
  • Look where you want the car to go, your hands will follow your eyes
  • Keep a light grip
  • Hands at a 10 to 2 position

Indicators

  • Normally Situated on the left of the wheel
  • Use your fingertips to control
  • Move the stalk in the same direction as the steering wheel
  • Gently touch to flash 3 times, click into place to keep indicator on

Windscreen Wipers

  • Normally situated on the right of the steering wheel
  • Different makes of car, have different ways of operation, make sure you understand how to operate the windscreen wipers

Headlights

  • Make sure you know the location of the headlight switch
  • Sidelights mean you have your rear lights on and small lights at the front
  • Dipped beam is the normal function of headlights, this setting will mean your rear lights are on and your headlights are on and dipped towards the road
  • Main beam is when your headlights are pointed ahead, these should be used carefully to avoid dazzling other road users
  • Different makes of car have different ways of operation, make sure you know how to operate the lights

De-mister/temperature controls

  • Use the de-mister controls to clear the windows
  • Different makes of car have different ways of operation, make sure you know how to operate the de-mister/temperature controls
